Gary E. Ruoff, MD

Dr. Gary Ruoff is a Clinical Professor of Family Practice

at Michigan State University College of Medicine in East Lansing,

Michigan. Dr. Ruoff is in private practice as Medical Director of

Clinical Research at the West Side Medical Center in Kalamazoo,

Michigan. He is a member of multiple prestigious medical organizations.

Dr. Ruoff is also the author of many highly esteemed medical articles

including “Management of Pain in Patients with Multiple Health Problems:

A Guide for the Practicing

Physician”. He has achieved many honors within medicine

such as having been the recipient of the

Michigan Family Physician of the Year and the Outstanding

Family Practice teacher of the Year.

After completion of this program, participants should be able to:

Identify adverse clinical

effects that may arise with the use of conventional NSAIDs or COX-2

inhibitors in patients with comorbid conditions, such as hypertension,

congestive heart failure, diabetes, and gastropathy

Discuss strategies for managing patients with comorbid conditions who require pain management with a conventional

NSAID or COX-2 inhibitor

Describe practical considerations and guidelines for managing acute and chronic pain in the elderly

Discuss the GI safety and efficacy of the COX-2 inhibitors in the multimodal management of acute and chronic pain
